Nords First Problem, Filling Seats Second (excerpt) • by Reyn Davis • Winnipeg Free Press • December 4, 1972

...But of the three former Black Hawks who dot the Jets' lineup, the one who is beginning to create rave notices is Black.

Hull is his ordinary self — superb — despite an energy-sapping blood count which is low, and a swollen elbow that keeps his slapshot a few miles an hour below its usual velocity.

Bordeleau is playing all-star hockey: Not only is he No. 3 in the league scoring derby, but his ability to be consistently good, game after game, is giving the 25-year-old centre a new confidence. And, furthermore, he's built his reputation as a league terror while piaying most of his games without Hull on his left.

Black, however, is the most surprising Jet of all. Yet his style of effortless skating and an almost patented aloofness

He has created more than one groan in the stands ... groans he's heard belore.

"Maybe it looks effortless, but I'm honestly working my hardest," said Black. "Some nights I agree it looks as if I'm not putting out, and maybe I'm not, but nights like those I'm gradually putting out of my system."

Silk-smooth on the ice, Black admits he's changing his style of hockey.

"Last year, at Dallas, I had defensive hockey drilled into me. We were instructed to follow our checks, stopping goals, not scoring them.

"Now I'm on the same line as Bobby and he's probably the most offensive-minded player in hockey. When you play beside a guy like that you have to be thinking of goals."

It was just a joke last summer when Black, dropping by the Jets' office, nudged president Ben Hatskin and said: "Thanks, Ben, for finding me a left-winger."

Only a few days earlier Hull hud signed his $2.75 million contract.

"Really," said Black, "I was just kidding. Now my friends are accusing me of bring serious."

Who helps who the most? Hull or Black? Hull, naturally, helps Black the most but the street has another side to it ... a side that has shocked more than a few people into believing the Jets have signed themselves a dandy 23-year-old youngster with a future as right as the franchise itself.
