Let's Hear It For The Goalies (excerpt) by Don Binda Winnipeg Free Press January 4, 1974
Friday night at the Arena, the New England Whalers beat the Jets 4-3 to mark the beginning of a new career in the major leagues for the New England netminder, Bill Berglund. Although the new goalie faced only 18 shots in the contest, he did receive a vote of confidence in his ability.
"He's a great prospect," said Now England coach Ron Ryan. "We are high on him in our organization."
Berglund was called up from the minors after the two regular goalies, Al Smith (hamstring pull) and Bruce Landon (arm bruise), were hurt. He appeared in just three warkouts before drawing the starting assignment in last night's game.
Asked whether he thought he would draw Friday's assignment, he said he thought he would be asked to play either in Winnipeg or Cleveland tonight.
Berglund was happy upon learning of his start and said before the game, jokingly: "Good thing I'm starting against a team that doesn't shoot much."
He thought the big difference between the minors and majors was that the pros like to pass more. He noted that when Bobby Hull stepped on the ice he "Sort of" concentrated more on him. Berglund also said that his defense protected him "fantastically."
