Al McDonough, a mid-season all-star two years running, has joined the ranks of the Cleveland Crusaders. McDonough, at 23 one of the bright young stars of the National League, signed a multi-year pact with the Crusaders May 2. Terms were not disclosed. His signing marked the first of an established NHLer by a WHA club for the 1974-75 season. McDonough, a 24th round draft choice of the Los Angeles Kings in 1970, split the past season between Pittsburgh and Atlanta, finishing up with 55 points on 24 goals and 31 assists. In the NHL three full seasons, he was named to the western division all-star squad in each of the past two seasons, first with Pittsburgh and this past year with Atlanta. The Flames acquired him in a mid-season trade for Chuck Arnason and Bob Paradise. A hard-skating right wing with a devastating shot, McDonough, a product of St. Catharines of the Ontario Hockey Association, hit for 35 goals and 41 assists a year ago with Pittsburgh. Crusader General Manager Jack Vivian, in announcing the acquisition, said "We lacked goal-scoring ability this past season and Al has a tremendous shot. He should give us a lot of offensive punch." |
