Spurs' Forey Signs With WHA • by Harley Key • Rocky Mountain News (link) • March 8, 1974
Connie Forey, suspended Denver Spurs hockey player, Thursday was signed as a free agent by the Chicago Cougars of the World Hockey Association. He was in uniform Thursday night when the Cougars defeated the Quebec Nordiques, 3-2, in Chicago. Although it was a bit vague, the transaction took place earlier Thursday, somewhat to the surprise of Sid Salomon III, vice president of the Spurs' parent St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League, and Clarence Campell, NHL president — both contacted by The Rocky Mountain News. As far as the NHL is concerned, Forey still belongs to St. Louis and consequently to the Denver Spurs. Yet, as the story developed, Jim Cullen, an attorney for the Blues, was reported to have participated in the WHA transaction, a spokesman said. "If so, said Campbell, "obviously Forey has chosen to go elsewhere and they (WHA) have chosen to recognize his right to play and not his suspension. I assume he is there (WHA) to stay." Forey attacked referee Malcolm Ashford in a Western Hockey League game between Denver and Seattle in Seattle on Feb. 20. Forey allegedly pummeled Ashford about the face, breaking his nose and necessitating hospitalization. For these actions, Forey was suspended from the WHL for the remainder of this year and all of next and ordered to pay Ashford $10,000 in legal damages. Reportedly, MacFarland also sent a formal letter to the WHA, asking the league to honor this request, which he believed "to be in the best interests of all professional hockey." Obviously, with the signing of Forey, this request was ignored. Forey, a 6-2, 190-pound forward, had 14 goals and 12 assists in 49 games with Denver. He did not have a reputation for a fighter on the much-penalized Denver team. In fact, he logged only 57 minutes. Jacques Demers, Chicago Cougars' general manager, said Forey is under a five-game tryout. "If he proves himself, we will definitely offer him a contract. After all, he is a free agent, having been suspended without pay. He is barred from playing with any NHL-affiliated team, but that certainly doesn't concern us." Demers said Chicago had Forey on its protected list last year, but that he was signed by the Blues. "He's a very intelligent, honest, a fine guy. I know what has been said about his problem in the other league, but that's only one side of the story." |
