Gila Cliff Dwellings, New Mexico
September 5, 2004

The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is located about an hour north of Silver City in Western New Mexico. Ancient cliff dwellings still exist here, built into natural voids and grottoes in the cliffs found here. Beth and I were in Silver City looking at some hikes and other diversions, and we wanted to visit the cliff dwellings, so here we were!

The drive up is scenic along narrow highways and lesser paved roads. The hike up to and through the dwellings is short. You are allowed some poking around in some of the rooms. It's quite impressive that they built such intricate dwellings up here. It certainly would have been a neat place to call home.

We spent about 3 hours overall here, enjoying the sights and the solitude. Not many people come this way.
