The Counties
L I N K S |
In 2001 I visited West Virginia briefly, just long enough to visit its state highpoiont at Spruce Knob. I also took advantage of the opportunity and visited a handful of easy county highpoints while in the area. Now married and with my wife's folks living in northern Virginia, we find ourselves close to the eastern bits of West Virginia when we visit them. In 2005 we visited the eastern panhandle counties and their highpoints. We have plans for more visits so my West Virginia project is surely not finished, although it will probably lurch along slowly. My wife's family (on her mom's side) goes back aways in West Virginia, and my wife has spent much time in and around the state in her lifetime. My visits have been limited to my one foray in 2001, our visit together in 2005, and the times we have passed through Charles Town coming and going from her folks. We have visited the race track there, plus a (very cold) day at Harper's Ferry, which sits at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers and was a key site during the Civil War, namely for its very strategic location and the fanous "John Brown'd Raid" of the armory there in 1859. In all, I enjoy West Virginia. It is a beautiful state, with the charming attribute that 10 miles by crow flight is covered in 40 miles by car along twisty mountain road. |
