Granite Peak Photos

By Scott Surgent

August 3-6, 2002.

Mystic Lake from high on the Froze-to-Death plateau flanks.

I'm negotiating the thin ledges of the upper cliffs. For those of you who
are looking at my setup, it looks like the belay line is going through the carabiner
on my hip. It's not. That's just an extra biner. I'm actually prusiked into the line...
The prusik rope is barely visible.

We unfurled an American flag at the summit. I'm on the right, holding the flag.
We were joined for this photo by Leon Barkman (below me, red helmet), who completed
all 48 lower US state highpoints with this climb. This photo was used on the "50 Flags
over 50 States" poster, which was created in honor of the first anniversary of the
September 11, 2001, attacks. The poster was placed at Ground Zero in NYC, and also
given to many dignitaries.

Sitting around camp after the climb, eating, drinking, relaxing.

Back at the trailhead, victorious!
