After nabbing the Yuma County, Colorado, highpoint at 6 a.m. and getting a breakfast in Burlington along the interstate, I set out east into Kansas to visit two very easy highpoints. Crossing into Kansas, the first exit (Mile 1) is for the town of Kanorado. From there I went south about 10 miles (exact figures I did not keep track) and orienting myself with the local road net, worked my way to a point just west of the two 4,000-foot blobs that comprise the Sherman County apex. I actually re-entered Colorado and parked along a very lonely county road, pulling off near a fence corner. The highpoints were a half-mile east. I could have driven into the field as the gate was wide open, but I didn't want to chance mud or mad landowners so I hiked it. I hit the first area at a north-south fence line pretty quickly, right along the Colorado-Kansas state line. The highest area was easy to spot using the fence posts as visual guides. The second area was about 100 paces northeast in a fallow field. I walked the rises and called it good, then beelined back to my vehicle. The round trip covered a bit over a mile and took about 25 minutes. It was cool, foggy and misty. Next up: Cheyenne County just up the road.
