I was attending the 2002 Highpointers Convention in Kenton, Oklahoma, during September 2002, when I decided to take a day out and enter southwest Kansas to connect as many counties as I could, with the goal of connecting Wallace County (Mt. Sunflower, the state highpoint, which I did in 1996) into my "glob", a continuously connected series of counties running from California down to central Texas. Despite the flatness, some proved to be minorly challenging, and I almost had an up-close and personal snake encounter that certainly gave me a scare! I tacked on two more Kansas counties into my totals in May 2004 when I was in the area. Both were very easy and it didn't take long at all.
