My wife and I spent 10 days visiting Hawai'i in July 2006, splitting time on Kaua'i Island, and later, the Big Island of Hawai'i. Beth had lived on Hawaii (O'ahu) in the early 1980s when her dad was commander of the Schofield Barracks Military Reservation, and she had returned a few times on business, including leading some tours on Maui. I had been on Hawai'i just briefly in 1985, staying two days on Waikiki in Honolulu as a lay-over while returning from Sydney, Australia back to the mainland. However, for both of us this would be the first time in many years we had returned to the island chain.

We knew Hawai'i would be beautiful based on all the photos and movies we've seen over the years, but even so the amazing natural beauty of the island is astounding, on scales too big to be described or caught on photography. I was blown away, and I have never in my life seen so much variety and natural beauty all in one place. We barely scratched the surface on our 10 days - we would need 50 years just to get our fill of the hikes and sights to be found in Hawai'i. We are tentatively planning a May trip to Maui in 2008. Yes, it's touristy, but it's easy to escape the main throng and experience the island on its own terms. Undoubtedly one of the truly amazing places on planet Earth.
