Beth and I made a four-day trip to Colorado to explore, have some fun and look for possible places to move should some job situations come through. We actually flew into Albuquerque, then drove up the interstate to Colorado Springs where we got a hotel just off the freeway. The weather was absolutely magnificent, with record warmth for this time of year, and clear blue skies in all directions. The next morning (today), we got an early start. We had a lot we wanted to do, which was mainly to explore Colorado Springs and its immediate local areas. But, I couldn't resist the temptation to drive out onto the Plains and get an easy highpoint. Fortunately, Beth was amenable to my idea of driving 35 miles to a rise in a rural road.

So we left "The Springs", going east out of town along highway CO-94. The Plains start pretty fast. A few miles of little hills, then whammo, flatness. We went east through the towns of Yoder, Ellicott and Rush, passing a few wrecked-car lots along the way (we figured this must be the wrecked-car business district). We also stopped in Yoder to get gas and snacks. Finally, we hit the Lincoln County line sign, went north two miles, then east a short bit to the obvious high rise in the road. There we were, highpoint done. We got out to snap photos. Weather was a bit brisk, but nice. Pikes Peak was still plainly visible in the west. Otherwise it was miles and miles of yellowish scrub and grass. Once we were satisfied we basically went right back from whence we came, spending the remainder of the day visiting Colorado Springs, including some hiking at the Garden of the Gods City Park.
