I have visited this highpoint twice, on a swing through the area in May 2002, then again a few months later during the Highpointer's Convention in nearby Kenton, Oklahoma. Baca County is the southeastern-most county in Colorado, a mix of plains and some mesa country down near where it meets up with Oklahoma and New Mexico. It's beautiful country with rolling hills and well-defined mesas, and the occasional volcanic plug sticking up out of the flatness.

First Visit, May 2002: I came up from Two Buttes in nearby Prowers County, which I did late the day before. I spent the remaining daylight getting to a remote county-run park called Carrizo Picnic area or something like that. It has some minor development, a creek, pretty hills and supposedly some old petroglyphs, but I didn't see any on my short exploration of the area. One other camper was there. The night was still and pleasant, and after a short hike early today, I got rolling for the county highpoint. The highpoint is called Carrizo Mountain, which summits in nearby Las Animas County. The Baca County highpoint is just some land on the mountain's east slopes.

Getting to the Baca County highpoint is fairly easy. I found County Road Q and followed it to a track across a pasture and up a mesa, where the road got a bit rough. Once on top the mesa, I drove along an east-west fence line to a gate and a junction with a north-south fence line, which is the Baca-Las Animas County line. The highpoint is a single contour poking into Baca County, and the rise and fall of the fence posts made it easy to gauge where it was. I hiked south on the Las Animas side for a bit, then squeezed through the barbed-wire into Baca County and paced the highpoint area. Once satisfied, I returned to my truck and was on my way. Next up: Bent County.

Second visit, September 2002: As part of the Highpointers convention in Oklahoma, I came back up to Carrizo Mountain with about twenty others. We convoyed in six vehicles from Kenton via local dirt roads for about 30 miles through some incredible mesa countryside. It was fun to repeat the visit and snap a few photos!
