I have been living in Arizona since 1992, and naturally have concentrated my hiking and climbing to peaks within the state. In 1993 I made my first attempt at Humphreys Peak, the state highpoint, but had to turn back due to white-out conditions near the top. I was successful on Humphreys a year later and have since visited this grand mountaintop on five other occasions. I have also hiked the two local Phoenix 'workout' mountains, Camelback and Piestewa, hundreds of times over the years, starting pretty much as soon as I moved here and figured out where the locals go.
The county highpoint bug came to me over a period of a couple years. In 1997 and 1998 I knocked out three county highpoints, but wasn't really working on the list with any fervor. In 1999 I joined up with the county highpointer group at yahoo, and that motivated me to finish off the remaining eleven counties in the state, which I did over a period of ten months, finishing in June 2004 on Baldy Mountain in Apache County. Ken Akerman joined me on about half of them; the rest I did solo.
I met my future wife Beth in 2002, and starting in early 2003 we began the process of visiting all the county highpoints again. At first we weren't necessarily looking to do all fifteen again, but as we were successful more and more, we made it a goal to finish the entire list. Beth currently has fourteen of fifteen, needing only Browns Peak in Maricopa County to finish the state. I re-did Browns with a group in December 2006, giving me my second completion of the fifteen Arizona County highpoints. According to the 'official' records at www.cohp.org, I am the 14th finisher of the state, and just the second person to do them all twice.
Since 2005 I have been actively working on the prominence peaks, mainly concentrating on the peaks that exceed 2,000 feet of clean prominence, but also hiking anything that looks interesting and fun. Arizona has 73 peaks with 2,000 feet of prominence, and I am very near the half-way mark. I can state confidently that I will not complete the entire list, as there exist a handful on private lands or with brutal bushwhacking required. Nevertheless, I am shooting for 50 or 60 done, which will take some time and keep me entertained in the meantime. Beth joins me often and has accrued about 25 of the prominence leaders.
Ultimately the real reward is that we have come to know our state much better and are always amazed at the variety of landscapes we encounter. We have literally been to the farthest reaches and remotest corners of Arizona and have enjoyed every minute of it.
